Anyone over 18 years old who can prove their status as a descendant of the Sephardic Jews originating from Spain or Portugal may apply.
Since 2015, Portugal has granted the possibility of naturalization to the descendants of Sephardic Jews through Organic Law No. 1/2013 of July 29 and Decree-Law 30-A/2015 of February 27. This is a historical reparation promoted by the Portuguese government for the Sephardic Jews, granting them Portuguese nationality and restoring their original ties with Portuguese territory.
It is important to highlight that the Portuguese Nationality Law is still in force, and the descendants of Sephardic Jews can apply for the right to nationality. The purpose of this stage is to investigate the Sephardic ancestor in order to determine the feasibility of the process for those who wish to obtain Portuguese nationality through this route.
Transmission of Portuguese Nationality to Minor Children
Portuguese citizens (father or mother) who have acquired nationality or who have an ongoing naturalization process (whether through the Sephardic route, by length of residence, or through marriage) can transmit nationality to their children under 18 years of age.
This possibility is provided for in Article 2 of the Nationality Law, Law No. 37/81 of October 3, and in Article 13 of the Portuguese Nationality Regulation, Decree-Law 237-A/2006 of December 14.

Transmission of Portuguese Nationality to Spouses
It is possible for a foreigner who is married or in a stable union to obtain Portuguese nationality, provided that:
- Be married to or living in a stable formal union for more than 3 years with a Portuguese citizen (the application must be submitted during the union).
- Have the relationship previously recognized/registered in Portugal (through Registration/Transcription of the Marriage in the Portuguese Civil Registry or Judicial Recognition of the de facto union).
- Demonstrate that you have effective ties with the Portuguese national community.
Process of nationality for grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens.
Grandchildren of Portuguese citizens, with at least one Portuguese ascendant of the second degree in a direct line, have the right to apply for Portuguese nationality if they declare their wish to be Portuguese and have an effective connection with the national community. This possibility is provided for in Article 1, 1, d) of the Portuguese Nationality Law, Law No. 37/81. According to the latest amendment to the nationality law.
